Story: The youngest son of a prestigious Goa-based family is found dead and the police rule out suicide. When they start investigating the family members, dark secrets start to spill out.

Review: Set in Goa, ‘The Raiker Case’ begins on a dark note as the police ponder if Tarun Naik Raikar (Honey Kamboj), the youngest son of the family, took his own life. It is well-established that he shared a strong bond only with his cousin Etasha (Parul Gulati). Even before purportedly jumping off the cliff, he tried contacting her several times. SP John Pereira (Neil Bhoopalam), who is assigned the Raikar case, declares Tarun’s death a murder and not a suicide. The course of his investigation exposes the secrets and weaknesses behind the powerful, and seemingly happy, Raikar family.

In the first episode, we are introduced to the large family ‘The Naik Raikar’, who gather for Tarun’s prayer meet. The patriarch Yashwant Naik Raikar (Atul Kulkarni) owns a cashew business and is also an aspiring politician. His wife Sakshi (Ashwini Bhave) is the lady of the house, who keeps the joint family strong in times of crisis. Apart from their daughter Etasha, they have a son, Mohit (Kunal Karan Kapoor). The family also comprises Lily D’Silva Naik Raikar (Neena Wadhwa), Tarun’s mother, who had lost her husband and daughter in a car accident before her son’s death. Throughout, the narrative gives us a vibe that there’s an unnerving silence, seemingly out of guilt, in everyone’s mind and it adds a layer of intrigue to this complex murder mystery.

Directed by Abhishek Sarpotdar, it’s a well-woven thriller that revolves around different versions of one murder. As the narrative progresses, complexity increases with each episode and makes you believe that almost any of these family members could be behind Tarun’s death. Despite its melodrama, this series—co-written by Karmanya Ahuja, Bijesh Jayarajan, Chinmay Mandlekar, and Anita Nair—keeps you hooked mostly because of the way it weaves in the unpredictability of characters. Twists and turns are well-timed and shift the story’s events quickly to everyone’s surprise.

Atul Kulkarni as Yeshvant Naik Raikar is magnificent. He plays both the suspect of a murder and a victim of politics convincingly. Ashvini Bhave’s experience as an actress shows in her performance. Both Parul Gulati as Etasha and Kunal Karan Kapoor as Mohit have shown depth in their performances. Neil Bhoopalam fits well into the role of a non-corrupt cop. However, his chemistry with Parul seems to fizzle out.

As the series unwraps over the course of seven episodes, there is an elaborate family drama that demands attention. Each episode ends on a cliffhanger, making you want to jump right over to the next one. Though, after a point, the drama does become predictable and the pace too tends to slow down. However, it’s the final episode with the uncertain climax that is quite intriguing and lays out a good build-up for the next season.

The riveting part about this crime thriller is not who did it, but how it all unfolds, which keeps you at the edge of your seat. Overall, it’s a good watch with the right mix of drama and suspense.
